Date: January 31, 2025

The Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation (HFRI) is organizing an event titled: “HFRI and Curiosity-Driven Research: Open Dialogue with the Scientific Community of Greece”, on Thursday, February 6, 2025, 09:00 – 17:00, at Gasholder 1 – Auditorium “Miltiadis Evert” of Technopolis City of Athens. The Deputy Minister of Development, Mrs Zoe Rapti and the General Secretary for Research and Innovation (GSRI), Dr Anastasios Gaitanis will give their greeting remarks on the event.

After eight years of operation, and on the occasion of the end of the term of the present Scientific Council (SC), HFRI wishes to initiate a fruitful dialogue on the importance of curiosity-driven research with representatives of the Greek research and academic community.

The event will begin with the presentation by the President of the SC, Professor Xeni Chryssochoou, titled: “2016-2025: HFRI’s imprint on the Greek research ecosystem”, during which she will highlight the Foundation’s contribution to the funding of curiosity-driven research, without thematic or geographical limitations.

In the following sessions, Members of HFRI’ s SC will present qualitative data for each Scientific Area. Each session will provide an opportunity for a constructive discussion with renowned members of the scientific community on what curiosity research means and how it is reflected in the research ecosystem, exchanging ideas and views for the future.

Professor Maria Leptin, President of the European Research Council (ERC), will intervene in the discussion and speak about the value of and investment in curiosity-driven research. “The creation of HFRI was an important milestone for Greece. National and EU level support such as provided by the ERC to curiosity driven research are complementary”, said Prof. Leptin, on the occasion of her speech at the conference.

The workshop will be live-streamed on HFRI’s YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/@elidek-hfri).
