In September 2019, the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation (H.F.R.I.) and the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) joined forces in order to strengthen young Greek scientists and their research capabilities in Hellas. The ultimate goal of the cooperation is the reduction and possible reversal of the braindrain phenomenon from Greece abroad.

The cooperation of H.F.R.I. and the ISN concerns the funding of research proposals which were rated A by the European Research Council (ERC) but were not funded due to the limited budget available. Through the 2^nd Call of H.F.R.I. “Science and Society” entitled  “Always strive for excellence – Theodoros Papazoglou”, dedicated to the memory of the late Dr. Theodoros Papazoglou, who made a decisive contribution to its realization, the excellent researchers had the opportunity to propose and claim funding of up to € 250,000. The budget of this action amounts to 10 million euros, with the 5 million euros coming from H.F.R.I. and the remaining 5 million euros from a donation from SNF.
