Renaming the HFRI and SNF joint action, in memory Dr. Theodore Papazoglou

Date: May 29, 2020

Dr. Theodore Papazoglou was an exceptional member of the Greek and European Research Community, while the work he leaves behind is invaluable. He left prematurely on April 12th 2020 in Brussels, losing to the pandemic of our time.

A foundation stone to the European Research Council (ERC), he was also one of the first visionaries of a Greek counterpart institution such as the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation (HFRI), the Advisory Committee of which he graced with his presence.

Theodore, although holding an important position as head of the support unit to the Scientific Council of ERC, never ceased to show his interest and support -by any means- to the excellent Academic and Research Community in the country.

In this context, he served as a catalyst for implementing the joint action between HFRI and the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF), with a total budget of €10 million, with the aim of supporting outstanding Greek scientists.

The first scientists to receive funding from this action, will begin to implement their projects in Universities and Research centres in the country very shortly.

As a minimum honorary tribute to the memory of Theodore, HFRI and SNF have decided to rename this action and grant it his name “Αιέν Αριστεύειν – Theodore Papazoglou”, so that everyone may be reminded of his particularly significant contribution and legacy, for the support of excellent research activity in Greece and Europe.
